Media Attention in Japan
The Daily Yomiuri, FM Cocolo <link>, and an independent
radio journalist. Sad was the lack of attention from the Japanese language media.
The Kyoto Shinbun told us why: they did not want to cover anything that could
be harmful to the economy. Clearly, the mainstram media's role is neither to
inform us about happenings, nor make us think about important things like the
economy. Their job is to herd us consumer sheep. Just buy. Don't think, buy.
Worry about the economy going down, not what the GNP economy does to society
and the planet. We tried to argue that BND is not bad for the economy (hey,
who says that Sundays are bad for the European economy?), but to no avail.
The Zenta idea spreads world-wide
Zentas were sighted even in North America and the UK (in at least
Nara, Kyoto and Tokyo hereabouts)! Thanks to Maura's networking with zen centers,
Cameron Stewart's Zen Santa sculpture (photographed by Chris Gergely), adbusters'
voting Zenta "one of the best culture jams of the year" and putting
it on their 2002 calendar cover, the UK daily Guardian who picked up the image,
and all the others who spread the word! Sounds like people found Zenta a non-confrontational,
non-threatening way to get the BND message across. Tokyo Zentas (Japanese report,

Kyoto event
The traditional Zenta Claus sitting meditation in front of Hankyuu Department
Store at one of the busiest shopping intersections, in the biggest tourist-looking-at-red-leaves-shopping-useless-things
season. Up to 4 Zentas sat simultaneously, from 1-6 pm. Elves handed out thousand
pamphlets (in Japanese. Several hundred in English). People were especially interested
in the stickers that said (in Japanese): "Buy Nothing you don't need Day."
Wild Santa dances, a large colorful earth banner, a calligraphy station where
people could take up the brush and write their BND message (later taped up along
Termachi street) were new this year.
Tokyo Zenta Sitting
Friends of Global Village bring the Zenta vibe to the streets
and find themselves soon in Adbusters magazine. (Report in Japanese with photos!)
